Dear Colleagues,

Thank you for your heartfelt and courageous letter. Your words reflect a deep commitment to justice, humanity, and the moral responsibility of intellectuals in times of crisis. I am deeply moved by your solidarity and your call for peace.
In response, I would like to share with you a public statement I issued earlier this year, which was subsequently echoed by ALLEA (All European Academies), the federation of academies of sciences and humanities in Europe. In this statement, I expressed grave concern over the ongoing violence and the humanitarian catastrophe unfolding in Gaza and the West Bank. I emphasized the urgent need for an immediate ceasefire, the protection of civilians, and a renewed commitment to international law and human dignity.
ALLEA, representing over 50 academies across Europe, endorsed this message and joined the call for peace, accountability, and the safeguarding of academic freedom and human rights. The support of such a broad and respected coalition of scholars underscores the global resonance of these concerns and the shared responsibility we bear as intellectuals.
Importantly, this message was also publicly supported in August by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation and DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service), further amplifying the call for peace and the protection of human rights from within the global academic community.
I believe that voices like yours and ours must continue to rise above the noise of conflict and division. Together, we must advocate for a future where Israelis and Palestinians live side by side in peace, with mutual respect and security.

With sincere appreciation and solidarity,

Prof. David Harel
